The Desert Sun newsroom has produced quality journalism for nearly a century, although it is far from immune to current trends in the news industry.
We are choosing to fight for the vitality of this institution and the protection of its staff to ensure the newspaper will remain a pillar of truth for the Coachella Valley and all of Southern California.
Our mission
The Desert Sun is an indispensable part of the Coachella Valley, having published the first draft of the desert’s history for nearly a century. As the reporters, photographers and producers of the region’s prevailing newspaper, we take great pride in acting as a pillar of truth and a watchdog of democracy that Southern California needs. We strive to give an equitable voice to all members of our community, and we deserve a voice, as well.
This union is the best way to protect the staff of The Desert Sun in an industry reeling from declining profits and corporate ownership that decimates publications with little regard for workers and the communities we cover. We are following in the footsteps of our colleagues across the country, such as The Los Angeles Times and The Arizona Republic, who have unionized. We deserve an active role in the decision-making process that guides our journalism and the future of our newspaper.
Our goal is the long-term health of The Desert Sun, its journalism, its staff and its readers. We want to ensure the newspaper remains an institution of knowledge and truth. We know our local management shares those goals, and we hope the company does, too. The best way for the paper to flourish is through collective bargaining for its journalists.
We deserve fair and equitable compensation for our work, our skills and our depth of experience, and that system should not discriminate on the basis of race, age or gender. We are determined to make the newsroom a place where people can stay and grow, as opposed to a place that encourages turnover year after year. A union is a step toward addressing stagnant wages, pay disparities and declining benefits.
Additionally, we are not merely looking to protect the status quo. We are fighting for hiring practices that will lead to a diverse newsroom that is representative of our community. We are also fighting to protect veteran journalists whose jobs are often unfairly targeted by our corporate owners through at-will employment, buy-out pressures and layoffs.
The newsroom is unified behind this mission, which drives The Desert Sun’s journalism. We are asking Gannett, The Desert Sun’s parent company, to voluntarily recognize the NewsGuild as our representative, and we are eager to work with management to achieve our shared goals. We look forward to continuing the newspaper’s proud tradition of telling the Coachella Valley’s story for years to come.
